Publishers always ask ‘Do Book Trailers Work?’ and my answer is always: ‘Yes, but only for 10% of your titles.’ I’ll explain: It is highly unlikely that a mass audience will respond to an unknown author sitting in front of a camera, with a book shot in the background, summarizing their content in a 4-5 minute speech. However, an audience will react to an unknown author if there’s a takeaway for the viewer (tip, trick, coupon, etc.) or something to watch that’s compelling. Sorry, the author reading a chapter from his book is not very exciting. Unless it’s a shamed politician…that might be interesting. Check out Sterling’s YouTube Channel for a few examples of how to give back to your audience via video.
